Back in 2006 our family booked a Competent Crew course out of Haslar Marina. Steve (my husband), Sean & Alex (our sons) and me. Steve had long wished to sail and this was the ideal opportunity to “give it a go”. Steve and Alex took to it like the proverbial ducks to water. However, Sean and I were not as enthusiastic.
Due to the “success” of this endeavour Steve purchased our first yacht, a 27ft Jeanneau Fantasia called Poppy which we berthed at Hartlepool Marina. At this time my interest in sailing was still negligible but I was encouraged to attempt a holiday afloat. Although I suffered from sea-sickness I was slowly catching the bug and advised Steve that if he expected me to sail more frequently we would need a larger boat. So in 2010 it was goodbye Poppy and hello Pandora’s Legend – a 40ft Hunter Legend.
In 2013 we purchased Shearmyste, the yacht of Steve’s dreams and spent the next three years bringing her back to somewhere near her former glory – still some jobs outstanding – but when is the job list ever complete?
I had already given up paid employment when we left for Portishead in 2012 (aged 43 7/8). Steve quit work at the end of March 2016 (aged 50 years, 5 months and 27 days!) and after initial setbacks caused by the poor engine exhaust design we finally left Hull in June 2016 with no real plans other than to head south and be in a different country for the winter!
